When it comes to New York based contemporary beatsmiths, few are as versatile, prolific and innovative as Travis Stewart, aka Machinedrum. Is there really such a thing as post-dubstep? Wikipedia tells me so. The name’s pretension makes me balk, but so does its slipperiness, much more so than post-rock or any similar classification. At its worst, it’s an insecurity-assuaging shibboleth for dubsteppers who hate the way Skrillex rose to fame. Having experimented (usually successfully) with some much more testing aspects of digital sound, including ventures into and beyond the fields of IDM, glitch, and even hip-hop, it is perhaps not entirely surprising that Travis Stewart has shifted direction once more. Since US-based electronic producer Travis Stewart first emerged back in 2001 with his debut album as Machinedrum on Merck ‘Now You Know’, he’s become something of a familiar figure to post-IDM listeners, going on to spend the next decade releasing a steady slew of albums under the aforementioned alias, as well as Syndrone, Tstewart and Sepalcure.
