FaltyDL - Phreqaflex

A little over a month ago I posted about FaltyDL, a producer from New York who’s at the forefront of the post-dubstep/post-funky/post-everything scene. His new Phreqaflex EP, a re-interpretation of 2-step, finally dropped on Planet Mu Records and it’s a great addition to his already stunning catalog of work. Full of punchy percussion, old school keyboard stabs, and mean, wobbly sub-bass, the title track settles into a funky groove right away and keeps the energy level up until it’s over – I can definitely see it destroying some dancefloors. And the other two tracks on the EP are equally as good. On “Because You,” a shuffled beat dances around on top of hollow synth pads, sparse melodies, and chopped vocal samples, while the expansive “My Friends Will Always Say…” boasts soulful vocals and a slightly more complex arrangement than the other two tracks. FaltyDL has worked out a formula for captivating dance music with perfect pacing and a sense of intimacy, and I think he’s one of the most promising producers the scene has to offer. There’s truly not a weak moment on this release, so buy a vinyl or digital copy over at Planet Mu.
