It's a playful spirit that Boxcutter - aka Northern Ireland-based producer Barry Lynn explores further on Glyphic, his second album for Planet Mu. The title track makes a neat fist of blending dubstep signifiers with Sun Ra/Pahroh Sanders-style astral jazz. Ever since his debut release on Hot Flush, and his first album 'Oneric' on Planet Mu, Bary Lynn (AKA Boxcutter) has been lumped under the dubstep banner with a certain degree of apprehension. Granted musch of his output to date has been around the 140bpm mark, and he often draws for heavy warping bass or dubbed-out washes of delay, but really thats where the similarities end. Having evolved from tight-knit scenes in London and Manchester, dubstep remains a largely localised phenomenon. Boxcutter's Barry Lynn might live in Northern Ireland, but his feel for the razor-edged rhythms and echo-chamber intricacies of the music id second to none, exemplified here by the heavyweight bassline that propels the epic Windfall.
