Venetian Snares - Meathole

Aaron Funk releases something like his 783rd album as Venetian Snares, 'Meathole' was actually recorded in 2003 between 'Chocolate Wheelchair' and 'Huge Chrome Cylinde Boc Unfolding'. Like Richard D. James as Aphex Twin and, to a degree, Tom Jenkinson as Squarepusher, pioneering a sound and pushing it to terminal velocity has its upsides as well as its downsides. Venetian Snares can claim primacy in twisted, obtuse, spaz-jungle (sometimes erroneously called gabber), but what happens when you begin to be typecast by your sound? Venetian Snares most recently has been smoothed out with black-melody Reszo Seress samples and orchestral chunks, but here - probably due to the gap between completion and release - Funk returns to vintage Snares - a blessing for purists and an exhilarating addition to his spraling back catalogue, but perhaps a step sideways rather than forwards. Released September 6th on Planet Mu.
