This CD has class written all over it: it's made by someone called Shitmat, all the tracks bar one have Babylon in their names and all bar one feature the same jungle MC sample. The basic concept is to take a load of old pop songs, add some nasty breakcore beats and layer a sample over it. Anybody that heard the limited 7” single Shitmat did last year will I am sure be eager to check this record out. The 7” was proper fucking good dirty ragga jungle.
This album kicks off with snippets of mastermind, jacko, the prodigy, the stranglers, the ruts and even ace of base samples. There is a lot of borrowed material on display here, but with massive jungle breaks over the top as well as the odd hilarious vocal part, usually chanting

Quite why Henry Collins took the name Shitmat is a mystery, but it raises a smile to counteract the frown that results when you peruse the tracklisting. Ten tracks, nine of which end in the word ‘Babylon’ raises expectations of one idea stretched painfully thin. It’s time to dispel illusions; one track, ‘Rough Babylon’ will do the trick.
