Venetian Snares - Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding

Ok, I’m sorry but this album is my own personal nightmare sprung to audible life! I should have been forewarned by the arty strangeness of the title, but nothing prepared me for the obscurity of this sound. From Track One, ‘Huge Chrome Peach’, we are ‘treated’ to a strange jingle-jangle of irritating noise. With no melody to speak of, no guitars, drums or vocals, I’m finding it difficult to find any positive points on this album. It’s sound is reminiscent of an annoying computer game your kid brother just won’t turn off however much you beat him! Imagine ‘Tetris’, but without the tune and you’re halfway there. Some tracks, notably ‘Bonivital’, start much more promisingly with hints of a melody, yet still manage to degenerate into the most annoying bleeps, rattles and chimes imaginable.

I’m at a total loss to imagine anyone whom this sound would appeal to – not even computer nerds or your games-obsessed kid brother! It would be totally un-relaxing as background music and listening on a car CD system should come with an accident warning. You might find it played as background noise in a particularly pretentious restaurant, but it would definitely put you off your food! The best way I can describe this sound is to ask you to imagine some strange modern-dance routine you may have been forced to sit through at college – this is the music which accompanies and slowly but surely drives you insane.

If you’re a massive fan of this band them I’m truly sorry for offending your taste and have obviously missed the point of Venetian Snares, but until anyone can convince me otherwise then I’ll be the one running screaming from this bizarre sound!
