Mike Paradinas has certainly rounded up an impressive list of musicians for this 10-track set of remixes of Speedy J tracks. Top of the old curiosity pops here are probably Boards Of Canada, who contribute two different but equally lovely versions of "Poppy Seed". Elsewhere electro breaks star Tipper goes far out with a spluttering, doubly-dope take on "Butch", Pole does his twisted dub thang on "Casual", and Coil and label owner µ-Ziq also impress. The jury may still be out on the validity of remix albums in general, but this one cuts the mustard.

An ironic title, perhaps, given the originals of these thracks appeared back in 1998. Still, the calibre of remixers assigned to Slag Boom Van Loon's tweaked acid and Krautrock updates suggest "So Soon" was worth the wait. Four Tet pokes up "Sutedja" with his trademark blend of martial beats and easy-going melodies, while Berlin dub maestro Pole adds what sounds like a massively amplified flea circus to "Casual". In 1998, two unlikely allies, Mike Paradinas (aka Mu-Ziq) and Jochem Paap (aka Speedy J) recorded a self-titled record under the name Slag Boom Van Loon. This phrase was not exactly loaded with meaning, but the album contained some highly unorthodox analog sounds, from the sitar-heavy 'Light of India' to the slippery, 3/4 tempo of 'Broccoli'.
